As the new school year begins, parents and guardians should take time to speak with their children about the internet, social media, and online safety, including cyberbullying. It is necessary that parents/guardians and their children have honest conversations about this important issue. By setting clear expectations, using parental controls, and regularly discussing online safety, parents can significantly reduce these risks and ensure their children benefit from the positive aspects of technology.
    Tips for Kids
    1. Spend time having fun with your parents and guardians online and help them understand technology!
    2. Never post your personal information, such as a cell phone number, home number, home address, or your location on any social networking site or through apps like Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram.
    3. Never meet in person with anyone you first "met" on the internet. If someone asks to meet you, tell your parents or guardian right away. Some people may not be who they say they are.
    4. Check before you post pictures of yourself or others online. Do not post inappropriate pictures of anyone.
    5. Never respond to mean or rude texts, messages, or e-mails. Delete any unwanted messages. You may need to delete friends who continuously bother you or post things that are not appropriate.
    6. NEVER share your password with anyone, including your best friend. The only people who should know your password are your parents or guardian.
    7. If you wouldn't say something to another person's face, don't text it or post it online.
    8. Do not download or install software or anything on your computer or cell phone before checking with your parents or guardian.
    9. Use the privacy settings of social networking sites.
    10. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable online, while gaming, or when using your cell phone, talk with your parents or guardian right away.

Basic guidelines for parental or guardian supervision:
    1. Spend time online together to teach your kids appropriate online behavior.
    2. Keep the computer in a common area where you can watch and monitor its use, not in individual bedrooms. Monitor any time spent on smartphones or tablets.
    3. Bookmark kids' favorite sites for easy access.
    4. Check your credit card and phone bills for unfamiliar account charges.
    5. Find out what, if any, online protection is offered by your child's school, after-school center, friends' homes, or any place where kids could use a computer without your supervision.
    6. Take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable online exchange.
    7. Watch for warning signs of a child being targeted by an online predator. These can include:
      • Spending long hours online, especially at night.
      • Phone calls from people you don't know.
      • Unsolicited gifts arriving in the mail.
      • Your child suddenly turns off the computer or other device when you walk into the room.
      • Withdrawal from family life and reluctance to discuss online activities.
      • Talk to your kids! Keep an open line of communication and make sure that they feel comfortable turning to you when they have problems online.

Here is a short list of potentially dangerous apps that parents should watch for and regularly check on their kids' phones:
    • Zoomerang
    • Parlor
    • GamePigeon
    • Chat Master
    • Among Us
    • Banuba
    • TikTok
    • Tellonym
    • Bigo Live
    • IMVU
    • House Party
    • Tinder
    • Ask.FM
    • Whisper
    • Snapchat
    • Jail Break and Icon-Hiding Apps
Parents and guardians should consider installing a monitoring app so they can keep up with their kids' web browsing and social media safety. A few examples of monitoring apps are:
    • Qustodio
    • Net Nanny
    • Screen Time
    • Aura
    • Microsoft Family Safety
    • Norton Family
    • Bark
It is a balancing act between providing our children a safe online environment and giving them the freedom to enjoy the valuable aspects of technology. Parents, guardians, and educators must work together to protect our children for a successful school year.

Stars and stripes with the text, Happy Labor Day.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker.

A satellite view of a hurricane.
Every year it's important for residents to know if they live an evacuation zone, a low-lying, flood prone area, a mobile home or an unsafe structure during hurricane season. These areas and buildings are most likely to be evacuated and knowing these zones helps Floridians prepare to evacuate and better understand orders from local officials.
This year, it is also very important for residents to know their home. If an evacuation order is not issued for your area and your house is not in an evacuation zone, you may consider sheltering in place. If you shelter in place, it's important to know your home and its ability to withstand strong winds and heavy rain.

Trees and water being blown around during a hurricane
While living in and visiting Florida offers many benefits and advantages, it is important to keep in mind severe weather hazards and potential threats. Every family and business should have predefined emergency plans and always keep an emergency supply kit ready and stocked.
Each Florida county has a designated emergency management program, and residents, businesses, and visitors should also visit their county's emergency management for the most up-to-date and locally significant information.

Schools Out. Summer Safety Tips. A child eating a bite of watermelon.
Summer is a busy time of the year--as school is out and our neighbors get outside to enjoy barbeques, festivals, and other outdoor events. As always, we would like to remind everyone to drive cautiously as children will be out playing, riding bikes, and enjoying the summer weather.
Of course, summer weather usually means higher temperatures, so remember these tips to beat the heat:
    • Take frequent water breaks
    • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15
    • Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle
    • Seek medical attention immediately for any signs of heat-related illness
We would also like to remind everyone traveling in a vehicle to always wear their seat belt and never drink and drive.
Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority hopes everyone has a great, safe & healthy summer!

Fireworks in the background with the text, 4th of July.
Wishing you and your family a safe and exciting 4th of July holiday weekend. The 4th of July holiday is a celebration of our becoming independent as a country on July 4, 1776. To learn more about Independence Day history from PBS.org, click here.
Before you celebrate remember that fireworks can pose a fire and safety hazard to those who use them. Use caution when shooting fireworks, and be sure to follow these recommended safety tips:
    • Read cautionary labels and performance descriptions before lighting a firework
    • Never give fireworks to children
    • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks
    • Use the fireworks outdoors, away from buildings and vehicles
    • Dispose of fireworks safely (wet them down and place them in a metal trash can until the next day)
For anyone who is traveling this 4th of July weekend, remember to always wear your seat belt and never drink and drive - instead, call a designated driver to get you home safely. Not only do you risk your life when you drive impaired, you are putting the other drivers you share the roadway with at risk, too.
Wishing everyone a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

Juneteenth flag with the text, Juneteenth - June 19, 1865 - Freedom
    What does Juneteenth celebrate?
Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill that was passed by Congress to set aside Juneteenth, or June 19th, as a federal holiday.
    Who celebrates this day?
The day is celebrated in the United States primarily by African-Americans. It is most celebrated in Texas, where it has been an official state holiday since 1980. Many other states recognize the day as either an official holiday or observance.
What do people do to celebrate?
There are a number of different ways that people celebrate the day including parades, marches, and barbecues. Many people get together for ceremonies that include public service awards, prayer, and the raising of the Juneteenth Flag.
Government and educational facilities will often have programs or information regarding the history of the holiday and the Emancipation Proclamation. It's also a time for African-Americans to celebrate their heritage.
    History of Juneteenth
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. However, slaves were not set free in the Confederacy until Union army was able to come in and take over. On June 18, 1865 the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas. The next day, June 19, General Gordon Granger announced that the slaves in Texas were free by order of the president of the United States.
The former slaves in Galveston celebrated the day that they were set free. The first Juneteenth celebration took place the very next year.
The annual celebration began to spread throughout Texas and surrounding states. However, it became less popular in the early 1900's. It became popular once again in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1980 it became an official state holiday in Texas. There is currently a movement to get the day recognized on a national level.
    Interesting Facts About Juneteenth
    • It is the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the US.
    • Juneteenth is the title of a book by author Ralph Ellison. Other books by Carolyn Meyer and Ann Rinaldi also center around the day.
    • Some cities and groups have Miss Juneteenth contests.
    • Strawberry soda pop was once a popular drink associated with celebrating the day.
    • There is a Juneteenth Flag of Freedom. It is half red and half blue with a star in the middle. Each year a Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony is held in Galveston.

While you're out barbecuing and with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, please take time to remember the brave men and women of the Armed Forces that didn't get to take off the uniform. Memorial Day is a day of mourning the U.S. Military Personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. They paid the ultimate sacrifice while helping keep the United States the land of the free and the home of the brave!
We want to wish everyone safe travels during the Memorial Day weekend, for those who are visiting family and friends in other cities and states. The holiday weekend tends to bring increased traffic on the roads, so please travel safely!
As always, please let us know if we can ever be of assistance. Have a wonderful and thankful Memorial Day weekend!
    Memorial Day Travel Safety
Many Americans are planning to travel during the upcoming holiday weekend.
The following are good reminders as you prepare to take to the road during the Memorial Day travel weekend.
    • Buckle your safety belt - it's the best way to stay safe in a vehicle and remember, the national Click It or Ticket program is in full swing over the holiday weekend
    • Don't drink and drive - even one alcoholic drink can reduce your abilities and impair your judgment
    • Put down the cell phone - In many states, using your cell phone while driving is against the law
    • Be prepared - take a map, atlas, or GPS device; make sure your spare tire is inflated and you know how to change it; have your car serviced before heading out; include an emergency kit with water and snacks in case you're stranded for more than a few hours; refuel BEFORE your gas warning indicator displays
    • Turn down the music - hearing sirens and emergency vehicles is an important warning to slow down and drive cautiously - you may be approaching an accident scene
    • Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel - eating, looking for CDs, and digging for things in the floorboard or back seat can lead to trouble
    • Be courteous - because of the volume of vehicles on the road, you're bound to run into a few traffic jams, be cut off, or be forced to stop short - remain calm and courteous - don't let other drivers ruin your holiday
    • Get plenty of rest - make sure you're well rested before getting behind the wheel, rotate driving duties with others in the car to avoid becoming too sleepy or distracted
    • Take frequent breaks - stop, get out of the vehicle, and stretch your legs often
Travel safely and enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Join us in celebrating Women's History Month in March!
In 1987, Congress authorized the annual declaration of Women's History Month by the President in the spirit of recognizing the contributions of everyday women throughout our country's history.
This month allows us the opportunity to recognize the achievements of women and the undeniable impact women have had in all aspects of life and fields of study.
Celebrating these efforts empowers young women to continue to grow within all fields and highlights the trailblazing women who came before them.
Since its inception, the affordable housing movement has had women leading the way. From advocating to improve their own families' living conditions, working to assist others in accessing affordable housing, helping organize their communities, lobbying for better funding for affordable housing, and administering housing programs, you look will find women leading the way.
The Housing Act of 1937 provided our first instance of affordable subsidized housing for low-income individuals and has been attributed to have been primarily authored by Catherine Bauer Wurster; an American public housing advocate.
Her book Modern Housing (1934) described the housing achievements observed in Europe and laid a framework for how we view affordable housing. She advised five presidents on housing and urban planning strategies.
Patricia Roberts Harris was no stranger to breaking barriers when she became the first African American Woman to serve on a presidential cabinet as she served as the 6th HUD Secretary.
During her confirmation hearing, when questioned about her background, she stated, "I am a black woman, the daughter of a Pullman (railroad) car waiter. I am a black woman who even eight years ago could not buy a house in parts of the District of Columbia. I didn't start out as a member of a prestigious law firm, but as a woman who needed a scholarship to go to school. If you think I have forgotten that, you are wrong."
During her time at HUD, she revitalized the agency and made the shift towards neighborhood preservation, allowing for communities to be rehabilitated and revitalized.
Women's influence can be found throughout the affordable housing movement and throughout all other aspects of our daily lives. Join us in honoring this impact throughout the month of March.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his death in 1968. Since 1986, the birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been observed as a federal holiday by the federal government. It should be a day of community and humanitarian service, and interracial cooperation. Dr. King's legacy also has ties to the U.S. Fair Housing Act of 1968.

We are humbled by the bravery and courage of the veterans in our community and in our country. Every year when we celebrate Veterans Day, we are reminded to thank our family, friends, community members, and particularly our residents, who have served or are serving in all branches of the military. Our veterans and their families have made many sacrifices to keep our country safe. Some gave their lives. Some lost the lives of their spouse, child, friend, or neighbor.
We strongly encourage everyone to think of our veterans and thank them when you see them. We support and honor our veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but every day of the year.

Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to the safety of those little trick-or-treaters. Fortunately, there are lots of easy things parents and kids can do to stay safe on the spookiest of holidays.
    Top Tips for Halloween Safety
    • Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
    • Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.
    • Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street.
    • Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
    • Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
    • When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
    • Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children's vision.

How can I protect my home and family from fire?
Most apartment fires are caused by grease on stoves, unsupervised children, or careless smoking. Tragedy can be prevented by practicing these home fire safety tips every day:
    • Clean grease off of your stove so it can't catch fire while you are cooking.
    • Don't leave food cooking if you can't be there to watch it.
    • Never store flammable or combustible products in your unit.
    • Never smoke a cigarette, pipe, or cigar in bed.
How do I avoid hidden fire dangers around my home?
Fires can be prevented by spotting dangerous items around your housing unit and taking action to make them safe. Here are a few suggestions about common hazards:
    • Keep your TV set, stereo, kitchen appliances, switches, and electrical outlets in a safe condition. Replace frayed or broken plugs and cords.
    • Don't run electrical cords under your rugs or where people walk.
    • Move rags, paper, trash, and other materials that burn easily away from stoves, room heaters, water heaters, TV sets, and other appliances that get hot.
    • Avoid leaving children alone at home, where they can start fires by playing with matches, lighters, and candles.
    • Don't overload electrical outlets. Each outlet is designed to safely handle only one lamp or appliance at a time. Overloaded circuits sometimes cause fires.
    • Do not store anything in the water heater or furnace closets.
    • Do not block access to the water heater or furnace closets.
How do I get out of my unit in case of a fire?
    • All exits must be clear so you can get out in case of a fire. The sliding side of bedroom windows must not be blocked by any furniture or obstruction that cannot be moved easily.
How does the smoke detector help protect my family?
    • All housing units have smoke detectors and are inspected for fire hazards. The alarm sometimes makes a loud, annoying noise during cooking or other normal activities. If this happens, open your windows and doors to let in the fresh air. Do not disconnect the smoke detector - this is grounds for termination of your lease!

The day is celebrated in the United States primarily by African Americans. It is most celebrated in Texas, where it has been an official state holiday since 1980. Many other states recognize the day as either an official holiday or observance.
What do people do to celebrate?
There are several different ways that people celebrate the day including parades, marches, and barbecues. Many people get together for ceremonies that include public service awards, prayer, and the raising of the Juneteenth Flag.
Government and educational facilities will often have programs or information regarding the history of the holiday and the Emancipation Proclamation. It's also a time for African Americans to celebrate their heritage.
    History of Juneteenth
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862. It went into effect on January 1, 1863. However, slaves were not set free in the Confederacy until the Union army was able to come in and take over. On June 18, 1865, the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas.

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, is a Federal Holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, was previously observed on May 30th from 1868 to 1970.
Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end on the first Monday of September. Women's History

Presidents' Day, formally known as Washington's Birthday, dates back to the year 1800, following the death of President George Washington in 1799. His birthday, on February 22, became a significant day of remembrance. It is now a federal holiday observed in the United States on the third Monday of February. It is a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents (past and present).

    Black History Month
Since 1976, each U.S. president has officially designated February as Black History Month. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
Black History Month is an opportunity to focus on education, advocacy, and remembrance while celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history and today!
We recognize that the study and celebration of Black History should continue far beyond the month of February.
In President Biden's 2023 Black History Month proclamation, he reminded us all that "This country was established upon the profound but simple idea that all people are created equal and should be treated equally throughout their lives.
It is an idea America has never fully lived up to, but it is an idea we have never fully walked away from either."
Within the affordable housing industry, we strive to build and foster communities that embody these ideals. Communities where all people can find their footing and thrive.
We understand that this is not an undertaking that can be embarked on alone; it takes partnerships, ingenuity, and innovation to reach our goal. As an agency, we partner with organizations aligned with our mission that empower our residents to conquer their goals and reach for new milestones.
We are proud to amplify and celebrate the stories and achievements of Black Americans not only during Black History Month but every day.

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Every year since 2010, the President has dedicated the month to raise awareness about human trafficking and to educate the public about how to identify and prevent this crime. The U.S. Department of State raises awareness of human trafficking domestically and abroad, through U.S. embassies and consulates.
During this month, we celebrate the efforts of foreign governments, international organizations, anti-trafficking entities, law enforcement officials, survivor advocates, communities of faith, businesses, and private citizens all around the world to raise awareness about human trafficking.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with service. Let's give back to our community today or find an opportunity to serve in the near future. Search for volunteer opportunities on:

Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
    • Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
    • When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children's vision.

Location: Eleanor. J. Johnson Youth Center
Fort Walton Beach Public Housing Authority (FWBHA), is interested in converting the Charlie Hill Terrace property through HUD's Rental Demonstration Program and rehabilitating the property for a proposed project which may currently receive funding assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Section 18, Public Housing program.
The purpose of this notice is to inform you that you may be displaced as a result of the proposed project. This notice also serves to inform you of your potential rights as a displaced person under a federal law known as the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act (URA). You may be eligible for relocation assistance and payments under the URA, if the proposed project receives HUD funding and if you are displaced as a result of acquisition, rehabilitation or demolition for the project.
    • This is not a notice to vacate the premises.
    • This is not a notice of relocation eligibility.
If you are determined to be eligible for relocation assistance in the future, you may be eligible for: 1) Relocation advisory services including help to you find another place to live; 2) At least 90 days advance written notice of the date you will be required to move; 3) Payment for your moving expenses; and 4) Replacement housing payments to enable you to rent, or if you prefer to purchase, a comparable replacement home. You will also have the right to appeal the agency's determination, if you feel that your application for assistance was not properly considered. The enclosed HUD brochure, "Relocation Assistance To Tenants Displaced From Their Homes" provides an explanation of this assistance and other helpful information.
(NOTE: Pursuant to Public Law 105-117, aliens not lawfully present in the United States are not eligible for relocation assistance, unless such ineligibility would result in exceptional hardship to a qualifying spouse, parent, or child. All persons seeking relocation assistance will be required to certify that they are a United States citizen or national, or an alien lawfully present in the United States.)
Please be advised that you should continue to pay your rent and meet any other obligations as specified in your lease agreement. Failure to do so may be cause for eviction. If you choose to move or if you are evicted prior to receiving a formal notice of relocation eligibility you will not be eligible to receive relocation assistance. It is important for you to contact us before making any moving plans.
Again, this is not a notice to vacate the premises and does not establish your eligibility for relocation payments or assistance at this time. If you are determined to be displaced and are required to vacate the premises in the future, you will be informed in writing. In the event the proposed project does not proceed or if you are determined not to be displaced, you will also be notified in writing.
If you have any questions about this notice or the proposed project, please contact:

Every year, it's important for residents to know if they live in an evacuation zone, a low-lying, flood-prone area, a mobile home, or an unsafe structure during hurricane season. These areas and buildings are most likely to be evacuated, and knowing these zones helps Floridians prepare to evacuate and better understand orders from local officials.
This year, it is also very important for residents to know their homes. If an evacuation order is not issued for your area and your house is not in an evacuation zone, you may consider sheltering in place. If you shelter in place, it's important to know your home and its ability to withstand strong winds and heavy rain.

Fourth of July - American Flag

Hurricane Season is June 1st - November 30th.
A sign that says Hurricane Season. A dark, stormy beach is in the background.
    What is a Hurricane?
A hurricane is a low-pressure system that generally forms in tropical waters. Hurricanes are often accompanied by powerful thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds, storm surge, and tornadoes.
Tropical systems are classified by wind speed in the following categories:
    • Tropical Depression: An organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with defined center of circulation and maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
    • Tropical Storm: An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum winds of 39-73 mph.
    • Hurricane: An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or greater.
The Difference Between a Watch and a Warning
    • Tropical Storm Watch: Tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are possible in the specified coastal area within 48 hours.
    • Tropical Storm Warning: Tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are expected somewhere in the specified coastal area within 36 hours.
    • Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible within the specified coastal area, but tropical storm-force winds may reach the coast within 48 hours.
    • Hurricane Warning: Hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the specified coastal area, but tropical storm-force winds will arrive in less than 36 hours.

    Summer's Here!
Schools out. Summer Safety Tips. Girl eating a slice of watermelon.
Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority hopes everyone has a great, safe, and healthy summer!

    Juneteenth - June 19, 1865 - Freedom.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, particularly to honor those who died in military service. Many place an American flag on Veterans' graves, And volunteers place flags on each grave at the United States National Cemetery.
While you're out barbecuing and with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, please take time to remember the brave men and women of the Armed Forces who died protecting our country.

    Womens History Month.
Join us in celebrating Women's History Month!

Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.
    • Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.
    • When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children's vision.

The Words Schools Out Summer Safety Tips with a picture of a young girl eating watermelon.

Wishing you and your family a safe and exciting 4th of July holiday weekend. The 4th of July holiday is a celebration of our becoming independent as a country on July 4, 1776.
Not only do you risk your life when you drive impaired, but you are also putting the other drivers you share the roadway with at risk, too.
Wishing everyone a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

However, slaves were not set free in the Confederacy until the Union army was able to come in and take over. On June 18, 1865, the Union army arrived in Galveston, Texas.
However, it became less popular in the early 1900s. It became popular once again in the 1950s and 1960s.

    • Get plenty of rest - make sure you're well-rested before getting behind the wheel, and rotate driving duties with others in the car to avoid becoming too sleepy or distracted
    • Take frequent breaks - stop, get out of the vehicle and stretch your legs often
Travel safely and enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day clip art
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with service. Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions' workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker.

    • Never give fireworks to children

While you're out barbecuing and with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, please take time to remember the brave men and women of the Armed Forces. Our veterans and our current military help make and keep the United States the land of the free and the home of the brave!
    Happy Memorial Day!

All of us at Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority are humbled by the bravery and courage of the veterans in our community and in our country.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.

Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority Website Earns Award
Orlando, FL – The Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority (FWBHA) was awarded the 2019 Website of the Year in the Small Public Housing category by the Florida Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (FAHRO) during the organization’s annual conference held recently in Orlando, Florida. The website earned the FAHRO Website of the Year among several entries from housing authorities throughout the state.
FAHRO has grown to represent more than 200 housing agencies, community development agencies, and associate members who work together to ensure that all of Florida’s citizens have clean, safe, and affordable housing.
FWBHA developed the interactive responsive website, FWBHA.com, to enhance communications with residents, staff, commissioners, and the community. The website, launched in December 2018, serves as the hub for the agency’s internal and external communications.
The website features agency news, an event calendar, an interactive property map, and information on the housing programs offered by FWBHA. The site provides convenient, digital access to resources including an online housing application and sign up to receive news alerts via text or email.
“The FWBHA website plays an integral role in our Housing Authority operations. The responsive site allows FWBHA to communicate effectively with our stakeholders across all computer devices – desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The site provides important news and updates for residents and improves the efficiency of our agency by streamlining processes. The website also allows us to provide digital resources and online forms, greatly reducing the amount of paper generated by our agency. We are honored to be recognized by FAHRO for our website,” stated Gail Sansbury, Executive Director of Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority.
The FWBHA logo and website was developed working closely with Brooks Jeffrey Marketing, Inc. of Mountain Home, Arkansas. Brooks Jeffrey is a full-service communications and digital design firm specializing in government website solutions for housing authorities and law enforcement throughout the United States.
The Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority, a HUD-designated High-Performer public housing agency, provides affordable quality, safe, and sanitary housing opportunities to low and moderate-income families, including elderly and handicapped persons, while supporting programs to foster economic self-sufficiency. For more information on housing assistance and programs, contact Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority at 27 Robinwood Dr., SW, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548 or phone 850-243-3224. The Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority wishes you and your family a safe and exciting 4th of July holiday weekend. The 4th of July holiday is a celebration of our becoming independent as a country on July 4, 1776. To learn more about Independence Day history from PBS.org.
    • Dispose of fireworks safely (wet them down and place them in a metal trash can until the next day)
For anyone who is traveling this 4th of July weekend, remember to always wear your seat belt and never drink and drive – instead, call a designated driver to get you home safely. Not only do you risk your life when you drive impaired, you are putting the other drivers you share the roadway with at risk, too.
The Fort Walton Beach Housing Authority wishes everyone a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

    MLK Day
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his death in 1968. Since 1986, the birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been observed as a federal holiday by the federal government. It should be a day of community and humanitarian service, and interracial cooperation. Dr. King’s legacy also has ties to the U.S. Fair Housing Act of 1968.
Life's most persistent question is: What are you doing for others?" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with service. Let's give back to our community today or find an opportunity to serve in the near future. Search for volunteer opportunities on:
